چکیده

This paper describes the concept of augmented reality, the process of drawing virtual images over the real world using a head mounted display. Using wearable computers, it is possible to take augmented reality software outdoors and visualise data that only exists in a computer. The paper discusses all concepts in detail, and the hardware used to build the system, explaining the various components and costs. Examples of AR applications developed by the authors are explored, showing some ideas as to what the technology could be used for. The Tinmith system is a complete software architecture designed to develop AR and other software that deals with trackers, input devices, and graphics. The design of the code is explained, including how it was developed. Tinmith is based on a completely free software system comprising the Linux kernel, GNU tools and libraries, the GNU C/C++ compiler, XFree86 graphics server, GGI graphics interface, OpenGL 3D renderer, PostgreSQL database, and Freetype font renderer.

Augmented Viewport: Towards precise manipulation at a distance for outdoor augmented reality wearable computers

In this chapter we present our research directions on the problem of action at a distance in outdoor augmented reality using wearable computers. Our most recent work presents the augmented viewport technique to enable interactions with distant virtual objects in augmented reality. Our technique utilizes physical cameras to provide real world information from the distant location. We examine a n...

An architecture for outdoor wearable computers to support augmented reality and multimedia applications

This paper describes an architecture to support a hardware and software platform for research into the use of wearable computers and augmented reality in an outdoor environment. The architecture supports such devices as a GPS, compass, and head-mounted display. A prototype system was built to support novel applications by drawing graphics (such as maps, building plans, and compass bearings) on ...

WearCom: A Wearable Communication Space

Wearable computers provide constant access to computing and communications resources. We apply traditional virtual reality techniques to develop a wearable body-stabilized space which allows multiple remote people to communicate with a wearable computer user. By combining communication and computing facilities we are able to use spatialised 3D graphics and audio cues to aid communication. The r...
